With the Oscar buzz building ahead of Sunday’s ceremony, our choice for Film Friday was a very easy one this week. How could it be anything other than The King’s Speech.
As long-term fans of the lovely Colin Firth, we were always going to love this film, but since its low budget release it has been gathering rave reviews from all sides as well as picking up several Baftas along the way and being strongly tipped for the Oscars.
As well as the incredible performances by Colin, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter, the film has been widely praised for its art direction and visual style and looking at these stills it’s not hard to see why.
Although the palace scenes were set against a suitably luxe and regal backdrop, it was Lionel’s office that really caught our eye. The dark, moody browns and greens, the 1920’s furniture and the leaded glass panels in the vaulted ceiling all combine to create the perfect backdrop to the quiet drama and tension unfolding beneath.
If you haven’t seen this film yet, then you absolutely must do, and we will be keeping our fingers crossed on Sunday night – lets hope it gets the Oscar success it deserves.
