It’s always great to get your hands on an interior design book that is full of inspiration and ideas, and Creative Living London has a little twist; all of its featured homeowners may have inspired you already, as they are all creative designers, stylists and artists. The through the keyhole vibe of this book gives the reader a wonderful insight into some of the most beautifully decorated homes in London; full of personality, style and of course creativity it’s a fun display and great way to get inspired. Here are a few of my favourite shots from the book.

Marianne Cotterill’s Home

This dining area in stylist Marianne Cotterill’s home is full of bold style choices and beautifully contrasted elements. The futuristic style of Eero Saarinen’s Tulip chairs and table against the original Victorian tiles are the perfect style clash. I especially love the pastel pink radiator in the background, a fun stylish addition.

While we’re on the subject of perfect clashes, Lisa Eldridge and Robin Derrick’s living room is full to the brim of different patterns that all work seamlessly together, even the gallery wall of paintings and photographs acts as its own pattern in a sense. The two bold fabrics from the rug and sofa shouldn’t work together but somehow do, along with the plush scatter cushions, a multi pattern room technically shouldn’t look soothing and calm, but they managed to nail it here.

Lisa Eldridge and Robin Derrick’s Home

Martin Ferrell’s Home

From busy and serene to minimalist and serene, this simply dressed bedroom is utterly beautiful. The painting along with the petite glass chandelier are an interesting combination, while the crisp white bedding allows them to do all the talking.

Fashion stylist and art director Claire Durbridge and Bob Sakoui have decorated their hallway in a unique and fun way; the geometric painted pattern on the back of the front door adds a sense of humour to the glamorous entryway. The gold assortment of mirrors and the vintage cinema seats with sumptuous berry red velvet creates a standout feature.

Claire Durbridge and Bob Sakoui’s Home

There is a really beautiful sense of bohemian glamour in interior designer Jo Berryman’s home. The single tall cactus in its hexagonal pot next the antique Louis sofa is effortlessly put together. Moving onto the bathroom, its chandelier, roll top bath and seating area are all elements that seem a little too much in theory, but here they all work into a scheme that would seem wrong without every piece.

Neisha Crosland is a wonderful textile designer, and her home perfectly suits her aesthetic. A quick look at her dining room and London might not be your first thought as to where it was located. The Japanese tree mural is simply stunning with the blossom tree framing the outside trees wonderfully. The embroidery on her headboard is another amazing and intricate addition to the house.

I absolutely love the effect that these glasses storage boxes and long pile rug create, giving the boxes a textural feel. This cosy bedroom of interior designers Joelle Talmasse and Martyn Gayle proves that you needn’t been deterred by the prospect of an attic room and sloping walls.

Joelle Talmasse and Martyn Gayle’s Home

What really caught my eye in this dressing room was how wonderfully retro it was, and yet still felt contemporary due to the wallpaper. The shining star of this room for me however, is the chandelier which is just a beautiful little touch.

Jo Wood’s Home

Mawi Keivom’s Home

When so many interiors are so serious it’s always great to see one that has a strong element of fun in it, without jeopardising the style and sophistication. Mawi Keivom, a jewellery designer, offset’s her electric yellow wall with a bold embroidered blue and white bedding; the whole look has a soft, romantic feel in a contemporary, atypical way.

David Carter’s Home

There’s a lot going on this narrow hallway in the home of David Carter, an interior designer. There’s a great deal of whimsy, man in the red slippers hanging elegantly on the wall for one. The dark black walls and gold ceiling fit the space well and the pops of colour give it a touch of life.

If I had tried to imagine Zandra Rhodes’s London home, I probably would have conjured up something similar to the reality, but nowhere near as perfectly curated. There’s a real sense of eclecticism to the style going on here, from the collection of vibrant chairs, to the vases with their own stands, it’s both wild and collected as the same time; chaotic and calm.

Zandra Rhodes’s Home

A neon yellow, high gloss finish on tongue and groove floor to ceiling panelling might not sound like a good idea, but after seeing Annie Morris and Idris Khan’s home, the jury’s out and opinion’s starting to change. The look is soften by the use of the rustic wooden sideboard and by reintroducing the colour palette in a piece of art; it definitely makes you want to explore the home further.

Creative Living London is a fantastic book if you’re looking for inspiration and unique ways to approach decorating a home. Full of beautiful images and words, a great buy to add to your collection.

Creative Living London is written by Emily Wheeler, photographed by Ingrid Rasmussen and published by Thames & Hudson.

The Crown is the latest original series from Netflix that has taken the world by storm. It’s a biopic telling the story of Elizabeth II’s early reign. The series reportedly cost £100 million to make, and it’s not hard to tell why. With an amazing cast, beautiful script and glorious cinematography, the whole show is head-to-toe style and grace, fit only for a Queen.

Here Elizabeth, played by Claire Foy, is shown in Buckingham Palace and we begin to get a glimpse of the inside of the famous building. The room is filled with oversized bouquets, while the walls are decorated with gold gilding and crimson red curtains. The style is rather typical of what we might imagine the inside of Buckingham Palace might look like.

While the interiors are dripping in luxuriousness and elegance, there is almost something understated about them. Though you can tell that there are countless priceless possessions, just casually placed in the corner of shots, the interiors come across in a simple, delicate way that isn’t about showing off. I think the shot above is rather wonderful, whilst taking no attention away from Matt Smith, who is playing the young Duke of Edinburgh, we can catch a glimpse of three grand chandeliers decorating the room in the background.

We get a look into the more personal rooms of the Royals as well, the dressing room of King George IV shows off the elegant but understated style. The room holds many beautiful antiques, I especially love the standing mirror and the traditional style rug.

There are of course lots of grand interiors to be seen, a shot follows the King as he makes his way down the palace’s staircase on Elizabeth’s wedding day, showing off beautiful ironwork, marble columns and balustrading as onlookers stop and watch from the gallery.

Buckingham Palace isn’t the only famous and wonderful location depicted in The Crown, here Cambridgeshire’s very own Ely Cathedral takes on the role of Westminster Abbey for Elizabeth and Philip’s wedding, and makes for a spectacular view.

I found this scene of the wedding party posing for their photos rather lovely, with the changing of the backdrops and the grand columns framing them, the scene has been shot fantastically. Here you get a look at Elizabeth’s wedding dress, which was an exact replica of the original, which the costume department reportedly took seven weeks to create and cost £30,000, and you can see just a glimpse of the detail of the train as it glides over the stairs in front of the bride and groom.

In the same episode we take a ride into the future, a few years on, in Malta. Here you can see some wonderful interior architecture in the form of columns, cornices and pediments, which frame the room wonderfully and against have an understated sense of sophistication about them.

Another from the Malta villa is this study, where the bookcase well and truly steals the show. The hint of the red damask embossed wallpaper peeping in from either side of the shot is a rather lovely feature as well.

One of my favourite shots from episode one, for its theatrical element, is the scene in which King George undergoes surgery. The operating theatre is lit by some amazing glass chandeliers, I find the juxtaposition of the clinical procedure and the grand, romantic nature of the chandeliers a rather charming concept, and it makes me wonder whether this is in fact a factual depiction of what really happened, or whether the scene has had a dose of artistic licence added to it. Either way it creates a beautiful, but chilling scene.

The whole series is shot through a dusty, romantic lens, which not only gives the whole film a romantic edge but it also gives the series a vintage and elegant feel, that is perfect for  its subject matter.

Here you get a look into King George’s office, which again is beautifully decorated in a classic style, and in the back you can see some lovely looking trim, which we’re always a fan of here at Angel + Blume.

The Crown is a marvellous series, there are so many reasons to watch it and the stunning interiors are just one of them!

I am generally a bit of a cold shower where Valentine’s Day is concerned (sorry) but on the upside, I am massively in favour of a little bit of love for your home. There are some delightful and thankfully subtle home accessories that add a little bit of joyful romanticism into your personal space, which will still be welcome once February 14th is done and dusted, and I am a very big fan of these. Here are some of my current favourites.

Gold framed heart by Hello Geronimo

Made up of lots of gold foil hearts on a midnight blue background, this fab collage from Hello Geronimo makes a big loving statement without a trace of schmaltz.

Rockett St George Love Neon sign

Neon is very in at the moment (we have finally got the idea Tracey) and the LOVE sign from Rockett St George looks great against a dark wall. You can also buy KISS and LUCKY – so take your pick!

Cox and cox two heart stools

Angelic and useful, these two heart stools from Cox and Cox are made from limed Mango wood and are perfect for children.

nina campbell china

This delightful bone china tea set made from Nina Campbell was originally produced in the 70s and has recently been relaunched. You can buy the whole set or individual pieces.

Bliss and Bloom two heart shaped bowls

Really useful and elegant as well, these lovely heart shaped bowls from Bloom and Bliss have a flavour of France about them, which is always appropriate on Valentine’s day!

Willow and Stone Tau heart hooks

Hearts seem to work so well in traditional ironmongery and I love these Tau heart hooks from Willow and Stone

Graham and Green Heart backed chair

And finally this delicate and delightful heart backed chair from Graham and Green makes a wonderful occasional chair or in rows around your dining table.

Happy Valentine’s Day to you all, and may love be present in your homes.

Inspired by the Chelsea Flower show which opens this week, and by the glorious sunny weekend we have just enjoyed, I can’t resist bringing you some floral interior inspiration. I love the great outdoors but in truth, these florals are much more my line of country – no weeds, no wilting, no hay fever and are still in full bloom in the winter – perfect!

Sophie Conran Axminster

Patterned carpet has often had a very traditional look but this bloom strewn carpet by Sophie Conran for Axminster is gorgeous and up-to-date.

I took a trip to Whittlesford today to visit the delicious Oxbow and Peach shop and although I had an inkling of what I would find having already discovered this wonderful company at an interiors fair, I had no idea what a lovely treasure trove it would be. They specialise in finding one off vintage pieces and they clearly have a very good eye because all their stock is unusual and charming. They are only open on Fridays and Saturdays so plan your visit carefully in order to avoid disappointment!

Some examples are shown below and if you like these, the book will be an excellent buy as it is stuffed full of beautiful images of Nina’s work throughout the world. I am loving the snow that is falling in Cambridge today (give me a few days and I will think differently) and I am once again marvelling at how nature really is the best colourist in the world.  The snow is the whitest of whites when it falls, perfectly complementing the winter trees, green parks and grey skies and creates the most extraordinary light in both daylight and as the sun fades. All of this adulation of the snow has turned my mind to how lovely white interiors can be and in celebration, I am highly recommending the fabulous book ‘Living with White’ by Gail Abbott and Mark Scott which if you love neutrals is a must have for your library.
